This workshop provides a foundational understanding of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). It covers key definitions, explores the interconnections among EDI-related concepts, and addresses common questions and challenges. Participants learn how EDI intersects with organizational structures, systems, and policies and gain practical skills to contribute to a more inclusive culture.
This workshop delves into diversity and social identity by exploring how individual characteristics and group affiliations shape our interactions and perceptions of others. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the different types of diversity and the psychological motives behind identity formation. Participants engage in reflective exercise to challenge unconscious processes and biases that have the potential to disrupt effective working relationships.
The workshop covers key concepts such as group structure, cohesion, and group processes, and explores the impact of groupthink and deindividuation on behaviour. Through a blend of theoretical insights and practical exercises, attendees gain a deeper understanding of how groups function, the benefits of group work, and the importance of effective group dynamics in the workplace. In this workshop, participants reflect on their social identities and unpack the concepts of of power and privilege. It covers strategies for using privilege to create inclusive spaces, emphasizes the importance of empathy/relationship building, and provides practical approaches to identify and dismantle biased power structures. Through hands-on activities, participants learn about the dynamic nature of power and privilege in the workplace.
In this workshop, participants reflect on their identities and explore the concept of intersectionality. They reflect on how their race, gender, sexuality, ability, class, and other identities overlap to create unique experiences of society. It covers strategies for using individual identities, and the privileges they afford, to create inclusive environments and emphasizes the importance of empathy and relationship building.
Michael is an EDI and group dynamics researcher and educator. His research focuses on the influence of diversity on group dynamics, group processes, and interpersonal relations in social groups and organizations. He also examines how institutional climate influences the experiences of individuals from marginalized groups. During a decade in the field, Michael has developed and delivered numerous workshops at an organizational level and delivered 40+ presentations at local, national, and international conferences. His workshops take a trauma-informed approach to address a multitude of topics including, but not limited to, power and privilege, inclusive climates for queer and trans folks, intergroup relations/conflict, communication, team building, and goal-setting.
